Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that can help reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, particularly those caused by repeated muscle movements. At Wycherleys Dental Practice, botulinum toxin treatment is provided by Dr Estelle Edgington, using established brands including Botox®, Azzalure® and Dysport®.

Botulinum toxin works by temporarily reducing the activity of the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, helping the skin appear smoother and giving the face a more refreshed appearance. It is commonly used to treat areas such as forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet around the eyes.

Initial effects can usually be seen within 48–72 hours, with the maximum effect reached at around two weeks. A review appointment will be arranged for 2–3 weeks after treatment. Botulinum toxin may not remove all lines and wrinkles, and deep-set wrinkles that have been present for many years may not completely disappear.

Treatment

Treatment will reduce the appearance of existing lines however if you do not currently have visible lines treatment will also delay the appearance of these. Many people are now opting to have Botulinum toxin as a preventative treatment. Remember though that a good skin care regime is also essential to prevent photo-aging (Sunscreen and Antioxidant) Botulinum toxin is a non permanent treatment and has no known long term side effects. The effects of treatment generally last for 4-6 months, re-treatment is then required.

Benefits Of Botulinum toxin

Reduction of Wrinkles

Effectively reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines caused by muscle contractions. By blocking nerve signals that trigger muscle movements, Botox prevents the formation of dynamic wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.

Non-Invasive

Non-surgical treatment that involves minimal discomfort and no downtime. It’s administered through small injections, making it a convenient option for those seeking cosmetic improvements without undergoing invasive procedures.

Quick Results

Provides rapid results, typically becoming noticeable within a few days to a week after treatment. This quick onset of action makes it appealing to individuals looking for swift cosmetic enhancements.

Temporary and Reversible

The effects are temporary, lasting around 3 to 4 months on average. This reversibility allows individuals to try the treatment without committing to permanent changes. If desired, they can continue or discontinue treatment as needed.

what is

Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin is a drug made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum called botulinum toxin. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles.

As we age the muscular movements that we perform during speech or expression cause the breakdown of collagen which is the substance that provides elasticity and suppleness of the skin layers. A lack of collagen can cause the skin to sag or crease so Botox® is injected to fill the area and freeze the muscles concerned by blocking the nerve signals between the brain and the muscles.

why is it used

How is it Administered

Botulinum toxin is given through very fine needles that can be injected at the exact site of requirement for example fine lines or crow’s feet. This procedure may be a little uncomfortable but as the needles are so fine this should not be too much of a problem and is usually tolerable.

The person who administers the injection MUST be trained in the procedure, know the correct dosage and how to give it cleanly and safely and dispose of the equipment appropriately. Always ask to see a certificate of competence and make sure they have insurance to cover their practice.

safety

Are There Any Risks

Although Botulinum toxin has been certified as safe to use by the drug authorities, it may still be harmful if used incorrectly or administered wrongly. Do not use Botox on infected or broken skin or if you have any rashes or skin disorders.

Even though Botulinum toxin is derived from a potentially toxic substance, it is given is such small amounts that it poses no risk to health. It is gradually broken down by the body and the procedure must be repeated every few months to maintain the visual benefits.

Botulinum toxin has become extremely popular in recent years as a safer alternative to face lifts. It is not a permanent solution to fine lines and sagging skin, but appears to work well if updated every 3- 4 months.
